How to install Oracle Java 9 on Ubuntu

Note that you should only use Oracle Java 9 if you explicitly need it, because it may contain bugs and it might not include the latest security patches. Also, some Java options were removed in JDK9, so you may encounter issues with various Java apps.

Some of the key features expected in oracle java 9 can be found here

The Java 9 release date is postponed to 2017

The Java 9 release date is postponed to 2017 because of delays in Project Jigsaw

Now it’s official. It might come to some as no surprise due to the long history of delays in the project, but looks like the highly anticipated Project Jigsaw has been delayed. Again. The good news is that unlike last time with Java 8, it’s still on the roadmap for Java 9. The bad news is that we’ll have to wait to 2017. Originally targeting September 2016, the target date for general availability is now set to March 2017.

Nvidia 367.35 Linux Graphics Driver Released with VDPAU Feature Set H Support

However, this appears to be a small maintenance update bringing fixes for some annoyances reported by users since the previous release. Linux Mint 18 is here, but Linux Mint 17.3 users can't upgrade just yet

At the moment, you can only get Linux Mint 18 by installing it from scratch. The Linux Mint project is working on an easy upgrade path from Linux Mint 17.3, the previous release and final version of the Linux Mint 17 series. Linux Mint 17.3 users should get a notification in Linux Mint’s Update Manager when it’s ready.

Samba 4.4.5 SMB for Linux released

Samba 4.4.5 recently released, is an implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB)/Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol for Unix systems, providing support for cross-platform file and printer sharing with Microsoft Windows, OS X, and other Unix systems.   It can function both as a domain controller or as a regular domain member.

This is a security release in order to address the following defect:

It's possible for an attacker to downgrade the required signing for an SMB2/3 client connection, by injecting the SMB2_SESSION_FLAG_IS_GUEST or SMB2_SESSION_FLAG_IS_NULL flags.

This means that the attacker can impersonate a server being connected to by Samba, and return malicious results.

The primary concern is with winbindd, as it uses DCERPC over SMB2 when talking to domain controllers as a member server, and trusted domains as a domain controller.  These DCE/RPC connections were intended to protected by the  combination of "client ipc signing" and  "client ipc max protocol" in their effective default settings  ("mandatory" and "SMB3_11").

Canonical Is Considering Dropping Support for 32-Bit PCs

Ubuntu’s Dimitri John Ledkov put forth a proposal to wind down 32-bit support on the Ubuntu mailing list recently. Hardware that can’t run 64-bit software is becoming much less common, while creating 32-bit images, testing them, and supporting them takes time and effort. (On Linux, the “i386” architecture is the standard 32-bit for Intel-compatible CPUs, while “amd64” is the 64-bit architecture originally made by AMD that Intel CPUs are compatible with.)

Ledkov points out that Ubuntu wants to limit the number of new 32-bit installations, with Ubuntu 16.10. This next release will not offer a 32-bit Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server image. The software could still be installed for legacy compatibility purposes via more traditional installers. By Ubuntu 18.10 in October 2018, Ubuntu would completely end support for 32-bit software and encourage running it in a virtual machine or container instead.

How To Install Wine 1.9.13 on Ubuntu

Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

While the latest version available is Wine 1.8.x, you can also install and test Wine 1.9.13(Dev), which is the under-development branch of Wine and brings the below changes:

  •     New version of the Gecko engine based on Firefox 47.
  •     More Shader Model 5 support in Direct3D.
